Eye Donation(13th Jun 2016)

35 million people are BLIND or going blind in the developing world and most of them can be cured. Out of 3 million corneal blind people 60% are children below the age of 12. Target retrieval of corneas by Eye bank of India is 150,000 corneas per year.

So, if we have got God's gift of Vision, why not try to pass it on to somebody who doesn't have it?
The number of people awaiting corneal transplant is out numbering the available donor tissues. Corneal Transplantation is the only effective restoration for the replacement of human tissues in the eye. This is considered as a precious and possessed gift of sight for millions of people all over the world.

Eye donation is an act of donating one's eyes after his/her death. Only corneal blinds can be benefitted through this process no other blinds. It is an act of charity, purely for the benefit of the society and is totally voluntary. It is done after death. The eye donation of the deceased can be authorized by the next of kin even if the deceased did not pledge to donate his / her eyes before death.

The Cornea is the clear tissue covering the front of the eye. It is a focusing element of the eye. The Vision is dramatically reduced or lost if the cornea becomes cloudy. This loss of the vision is referred as corneal blindness.

All religions endorse eye donation. There are numerous examples in our traditions and scriptures, which endorse eye and organ donation. A part of the body would be consumed by flames and reduced to ashes or which is buried and allowed to decay and disintegrate & cannot be put to a better use than restoring vision to the needy!!!

Frequently Asked Questions:

3.How long can a donor cornea be stored?
The Eye-Bank does keep a "bank" of tissue in its laboratory.Fortunately, cornea tissue can be stored for up to 14 days before it must be used for transplant. However, since the demand for ocular tissue is so great most donor tissue is distributed with in three or four days after its arriival.
4.Does Eye removal will disfigure the decreased face?
Eye removal procedure doesnot delay funeral formalities nor does it cause disfigurement of face.

Close the eyes of the deceased and place moist cotton over the eyes.
Raise the head about six inches with a pillow ,to lesson incidence of bleeding during removal of the eyes.
Switch off the fans and keep the air-conditioner or cooler on.
Eyes must be removed with in 4-6 hours after death, and the nearest eye bank should be informed imediately.
